Culture
Khmer is the official language in Cambodia, used in education and government administration. Due to some years under French rule, French was also widely spoken, mostly amid the educated classes until the Khmer Rouge took over and killed many educated peoples.

Religion
Cambodia is mostly Buddhist with 80% of its population being Buddhist, 1% Christian, and the remaining Islam atheist or animism.

Traditions and celebrations
Cambodia has colorful festivals like the Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben, and Water Festival (Bon Om Touk), and the Royal Ploughing ceremony. The Khmer new years occurs in April and goes on for 3 whole days. During the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, oxen are let loose Brahmin priests observe what they eat to predict the outcome of the next years harvest. Pchum En, is a 15-day festival for honoring the dead to make sure they don’t come back and eat the pjs and blood of the living. The Bon Om Touk Festival, or the water festival is a small series of boat races along the Mekong and Tonle Sal rivers. It’s commonly canceled due to drought.
